With summer coming to an end, the heat still lingers and there's no stopping us from wanting cold treats. Thankfully, a new shaved ice dessert shop reached our shores and is up for the challenge to keep us cool. And it has legit matcha to boot!
Hello, Shari Shari Kakigori House!
Shari Shari Kakigori House from Hong Kong is finally opening in Manila this June and will be serving its bestsellers Japanese Tofu Kakigori, Matcha Cream Special, Earl Grey Milk Tea and Strawberry Special among others. As a Manila exclusive flavor, Shari Shari Philippines will also serve Cantaloupe Melon.
Unlike Korean bingsu which focuses more on the abundance of toppings, kakigori gets most of its flavor from the syrup that is generously drizzled on top of the fluffy snow-like shaved ice. And Shari Shari sure knows how to impress!
During the media preview of Shari Shari, my sister and I tried Matcha Cream Special and Cantaloupe Melon. I heard that another very popular flavor is Strawberry Special which I noticed to be ordered by most of the attendees.
I enjoyed watching the busy people behind the counter making cold treats as I wait for my bowl. They carefully pat the shaved ice into a huge ball before pouring some syrup in.
Then top it off with sweetened whipped cream.
Bowls like Strawberry and Cantaloupe are also topped with fresh fruit bits but do not go overboard as some bingsu joints.
With focus on the cloud-like ice and freshly made sauces, Shari Shari delivered in terms of texture and flavor. Each bite was like indulging in glorious melts in your mouth goodness with a pronounced taste of whichever flavor you choose.
My Matcha Cream Special had this lovely sweet taste that makes it so easy for non-matcha lovers to enjoy. But don't get me wrong, the green tea taste is definitely there. It's just that there was no hint of bitterness at all.
And I was so excited when I got word from Darlene, one of the owners who brought Shari Shari to Manila, that they will also offer Uji Matcha which best suits the palete of hardcore matcha lovers. With its promise of strong earthy flavor, I couldn't help myself drool at the thought of having one. And yes, it also comes with homemade mochi balls!
My sister's bowl of Cantaloupe Melon is also great. Its refreshing taste make it an excellent dessert to cap one's meal. The melon bits were sweet too and I love the added texture it gave the dessert.
I'm usually iffy with desserts heavily covered by syrup for it usually taste artificial but Shari Shari's sauces sure taste fresh and the real deal. In fact, its Hong Kong principal is very strict that several of its ingredients are sourced from Kyoto for that genuine flavor Shari Shari is known for.
A bowl of its premium kakigori costs slightly upwards PHP300 and regular bowls are about PHP280 to PHP300. Though priced at a premium, you would definitely get your money's worth as each spoonful guarantees a grin from ear to ear.
Shari Shari Kakigori House is located at Ground Floor, Serendra, McKinley Road, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.
