Hello, Bang! Bang! Bar.
Bang! Bang! is the slightly hidden bar of VBQ Vietnamese Barbeque & Hotpot.
I first thought that it was a speakeasy bar given its discreet location. But after finding out that this place has a DJ to liven up the night made me think otherwise.
The dimly lit room has a bunch of couches perfect for groups of friends. And though Bang Bang only offers a lean list of cocktails (for now), there's surely a cocktail for everyone as each drink has a different taste profile.
We tried all 13 available cocktails during our visit and here are my top picks:
Dear Cheenie (PHP265) is the lead bartender's favorite drink. Named after his wife, the head chef of Lugaw Manila (which is at the back of VBQ and a must stop after Bang! Bang!), this drink is a mix of Jose Cuervo Silver with tequila sous vide Shanza Bing, Creme de Casis, ginger, basil, lemon, Asian spice syrup and grapefruit bitters. Expect pronounced taste of ginger which I found rather refreshing and soothing.
If you prefer something fruity and sweet, Free as a Jungle Bird (PHP345) is the one for you. It is a concoction made with jasmine tea infused rum, Rinomoto, lime, lychee, green apple, kiwi, oregano and pine juice. A lovely blend of fruits and herbs, this is one easy drink to start the night.
My favorite was Pride and Tonic (PHP265). Made to honor the LGBTQIA community, this is Bang! Bang!'s interpretation of a gender-free cocktail.
Picturesque and mild, this blend of cucumber infused gin, peach schnapps, passion fruit liquer and tonic is yet another light and easy drink. It's perfect for those late night catch up sessions with friends where you do not want to get too drunk not to remember all the juicy tidbits.
Milk Tea lovers would enjoy Bang! Bang!'s MILF (no, that isn't a typo). The pronounced black tea taste surprisingly went well with the Oolong infused reposado (rested) tequila, rum sous vide pandan and milk.
Crowd started to come in around 9 p.m. though there was still no sight of the DJ.
I honestly don't like crowded and noisy places. But I'd be willing to drop by this place again for more of my new favorite cocktails. I just have to make sure to be here as soon as it opens at 7 p.m. to avoid its peak hours.
