Hello, The Halal Guys!
I first had The Halal Guys back in 2012 when I visited New York. I still remember the pro tips I got from some locals saying that the nearer the stall to Central Park, the more expensive it gets and that there are fake The Halal Guys as well. Its multiple stalls, long queues and presence of posers prove this casual gyro shop is indeed popular.
It wasn't surprising too that The Halal Guys started off as a craze here in Manila. Foodies lined up for an hour or two just to get hold of its famous platters. But eventually, the hype died down and The Halal Guys faced a lot of mixed reviews.
I had low expectations for this franchise with all the bad feedback I've read but was left delighted. Perhaps it was because I waited for the hype to die down and allowed The Halal Guys to improve. But all I know was it was one of the good and affordable meals I could get in town. A regular platter costs PHP299 and it could easily make two hungry individuals full.
I usually get chicken platter whenever I drop by The Halal Guys. But as a sucker for new offerings, I tried Spicy BBQ Chicken Platter.
Okay, I have to admit. I somehow regretted not getting my usual order after opening my platter. Its shiny glaze was rather intimidating. I could already picture myself sweating and panicking to reach for my glass of water after a mouthful. I skipped the hot sauce and tried a small chunk of chicken.
And... it was surprisingly not that spicy. Imagine typical barbeque sauce as glaze. This platter is just mildly spiced that even those with very low spice tolerance can enjoy this with gusto. Just add hot sauce if you want more heat.
Though I still prefer my usual Chicken Platter, I could see myself grabbing another platter or two of this new flavor.
