Hello, Nono's.
I used to think that Nono's is just a place for desserts knowing that the person behind this dainty shop is the wonderful Baba Ibazeta-Benedicto of Classic Confections. But I was totally wrong when I got a bite of Nono's Fried Truffle Cheese Wontons. Crunchy and packed with umami, this amazing starter made me smile from ear to ear! And I couldn't help myself from wanting more. My sister also had a Cooking Master Boy moment with Nono's when she had its cheesy Mac N Cheese.
We braved the gloomy weather last week to try Nono's newest dishes and I discovered new favorites.
We started off with a few bowls of Parmesan Truffle Fries (PHP255) served with paprika aioli dip.
Fragrant and flavorful, we were off to a great start! The fries were actually good as is and didn't even need the dip. But do try it too if you want extra flavor or spice. I am biased with this one as I am a big fan of truffle.
Chicken Lettuce Wrap (PHP295) reminded me of the staple Chinese duck dish. Unlike the duck counterpart, this chicken, tofu, water chestnuts and shiitake mushrooms combination was not as oily but just as flavorful with the oriental sauce. The crisp Romaine lettuce gave the dish a more refreshing and light taste. I think the meat would also go well with rice if you prefer something heavier.
Another healthy meal option is this bowl of Miso-glazed Salmon with Red Rice (PHP525). The Japanese Miso glazed baked salmon fillet was nothing but pure joy. Its soft texture was well complemented by the tougher red rice and snappy corn kernels.
If you're avoiding rice, make sure not to get Nono's Sisig (PHP325). This crispy pork belly served on sizzling plate is one dish you'd love! Crunchy in every bite, I loved how each mouthful had that tangy punch from calamansi. The generous serving of chicharon and garlic chips made this even more addictive. It's also served with a bowl of garlic rice. (Note to sisig purists: This is served with egg.)
Kids and kids-at-heart would love this platter of Chicken and Waffles (PHP345). Served with a choice of Nono's Homestyle or Honey Sriracha-glazed crispy boneless chicken fillet served with homestyle waffle, this dish is a harmonious blend of sweet and savory flavors. Make sure to dip your share of fried chicken in honey and gravy for that unbelievably good combination. Just make sure to eat this dish as soon as it hits the table as the chicken fillet tends to get dry after a while.
Shrimp El Diablo (PHP425) was probably the only dish I didn't like. It was just too spicy for my liking that I gasped for water as soon as I popped a piece of shrimp in my mouth. I was told though that you can request to tone down the heat of this dish.
We capped our meal with a few plates of Chocolate Chocolate Cheesecake (PHP175/slice | PHP1,550/whole). This decadent piece of heaven sure was yummy. Chocolatey yet not too rich as it was balanced by the slight tart of cheesecake.
I also tried Nono's Red Sangria which was pretty good. I loved the sugared rim best!
I can't wait for Nono's to finally open in BGC!
