July was a stressful month for me. I had to learn new things for work and keep up with having new content for my blog. I'd often find myself sleeping so late just so I could have everything done. Now that I'm starting to get the hang of it, there's no better way to reward myself than with good food at Nono's.
Hello, Nono's.
I used to think that Nono's is just a place for desserts knowing that the person behind this dainty shop is the wonderful Baba Ibazeta-Benedicto of Classic Confections. But I was totally wrong when I got a bite of Nono's Fried Truffle Cheese Wontons. Crunchy and packed with umami, this amazing starter made me smile from ear to ear! And I couldn't help myself from wanting more. My sister also had a Cooking Master Boy moment with Nono's when she had its cheesy Mac N Cheese.

Love at First Bite: Sabor Bar de Vinos
Novotel Manila Araneta Center has been known as a hotel of choice by many locals and travelers alike. Situated in the bustling part of Quezon City, this hotel is just a few steps away from malls like Gateway Mall and entertainment centers like Kia Theater and Smart Araneta Coliseum. It also serves as a great place for staycations with its impressive amenities. And just recently, Novotel came up with another reason why it is a hotel worth visiting.
Hello, Sabor Bar de Vinos.
Sabor is Novotel's newest food concept that will delight any food enthusiast. It is a tapas bar that offers ample selection of small Spanish savory dishes perfect to be enjoyed with a glass or two of your favorite wine.

First Bite: En Tirage
Gone are the days when wine is reserved for fancy or special occasions. With establishments redefining wine drinking and making it casual and less intimidating, more foodies grow to appreciate this drink that is said to be good for the heart. And last Saturday, I decided to swing by this newly opened wine shop in Mandala Park for a glass of my favorite sangria and sample some of its bestsellers.
Hello, En Tirage.
Tucked inside the drinking hot spots of Mandala Park, En Tirage (pronouced as en-ti-haj) has this undeniably chill vibe with its cold interior color scheme and dim lights.

When in Cebu: La Vie Parisienne
Cebu is slowly turning into a foodie paradise with new restaurants opening here and there. One of the restaurants that captured my interest is La Vie Parisienne. It is not particularly new but it has a romantic ambiance and I figured that it’s a great place to spend a night with R for his post birthday celebration.
Hello, La Vie Parisienne!
I am aware that this place is more of a bakery than a restaurant but I didn’t know that they have quite a limited selection in terms of heavier, dinner appropriate dishes.

Restaurant Love: Barcino Wine Resto Bar
Barcino has been around for a few years now yet I still remember its launch years back where I was still new with food blogging. I guess it is hard to forget such a fantastic dining experience and being in the awesome company of top foodies and wine connoisseurs. Hence it was such a treat to have my first 2017 date with R at what I consider one of the best tapas restaurants in town.
Hello, Barcino!
We were warmly greeted by the front hostess upon entering its Forbes Town branch and were quickly ushered to our table near the bar.

First Bite: Made Nice Supper Club
I have been an active looloo user for over a year now and it never seems to get old. I just love the looloo community and I truly enjoy listening to each and everyone’s food and adventure stories. Coming from different walks of life, each member are like spices and herbs that make the community a lot more interesting. And what’s a fun community without regular meet ups, or in our case, eat ups? Our resident PRO, J, arranged a looloo holiday dinner open to all active reviewers and it sure was a festive one! Our venue? The new restaurant across Your Local called Made Nice Supper Club.
Hello, Made Nice Supper Club!
It could be challenging to spot this place if you have no clue where it is along the foodie Esteban street. It is across Your Local and beside a bridal store. With its minimalist MN signage, you have to remember those two landmarks to avoid missing it, as some of us did.

Restaurant Love: Single Origin
Breakfast is love. If breakfast is a guy, I’d definitely date him and who knows, marry him as well. There’s something so appealing with breakfast that I simply could not stop having it all day long. And a lot of foodies share the same addiction hence the number of all-day breakfast restaurants around the city. One of my favorites is Single Origin and it surely delighted my tastebuds when I dropped by its second branch a few months ago.
Hello, Single Origin.
This was my first time to visit its Rockwell branch which opened last September and I noticed that it is bigger than its BGC branch.
I was greeted by warm hues of brown, suspended lights and charming flowers on each table. I also spotted a few communal tables which are perfect for large groups or those who do not like feeling alone.

First Sip: Chotto Matte
A trip to Izakaya Sensu is not complete without visiting its neighbor Chotto Matte which means "wait a minute" in Japanese. I failed to ask why they named it such but I think it has the same concept as Brotzeit (which means break). The idea is to slow down and have a drink or two. And this is why Chotto Matte is open from lunch till dinner.
Hello, Chotto Matte!
This speakeasy bar seemed to attract a slightly older crowd with its dim lounge-like setting.
With a huge selection of Suntory beverages, Japanese liquor lovers would go crazy over the wide selections! They have beers, cocktails, mocktails, sake and whathaveyou concoctions like Sakuratini. 🍸
I went with Chu Hi Sours line of beverages which is marketed as great light afternoon drinks. I initially ordered Melon (PHP195) but Andrej (one of the owners of Izakaya Sensu and Chotto Matte) insisted that we also try Grapefruit (PHP175).
Melon was served first (as Grapefruit was requested after I ordered my drink).
It was basically a melon-flavored shōchū. (Shōchū is a Japanese traditional hard liquor that typically contains 25% alcohol by volume. It is usually distilled from rice, barley, buckwheat, sweet potatoes or brown sugar.)
It had a nice hint of melon and it was like drinking a refreshing glass of light beer. Personally, I think that it would have been better if the melon taste was a bit stronger so that I'd have a sweeter drink to pair my meal with.

First Bite: Wolfgang's Steakhouse
R never fails to make
me fat. He suddenly messaged me that we could have a fancy dinner a few days
ago and that I could pick any restaurant. I went with this steakhouse in
Resorts World Manila. And so, we braved the weeknight traffic (which was
intensified by the sudden heavy rainfall) and got to RW Manila a bit past 8.
Hello, Wolfgang’s
Steakhouse!
I was surprised to see the steakhouse packed on a weeknight.
There were only a few tables left when we got there.
I was ushered to the table near the washroom and after a few
minutes, I felt uncomfortable with people walking past me. I also disliked the
creaking sound and movement of the floor every time someone steps on the
planks. They have to do something with the terrible flooring installation.
I was then moved to another table nearer the bar area and it
addressed my first concern but not the second. It seems like the whole place
had uneven flooring.
Anyway, back to steaks.
R and I ordered Porterhouse
for Two (PHP4,988 | 1kg) and Filet Mignon (PHP2,958 |450g). We also
got Lobster Cocktail (PHP3,688) for
appetizer and Jumbo Baked Potato
(PHP158) as side dish. I also ordered a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon (PHP418) to pair my steak.
While waiting for our meals, we enjoyed the wait basket of
warm bread and butter. I loved the soft dinner buns with ham bits.
The lobster cocktail was served next. (Side note: I was
quite disappointed with how the server took this order. She was not sure on how
much lobster we get per order. I just had to ask as PHP3,688 is pretty steep
for an appetizer.) One order comes with one lobster cut in half.
The server assisted us with our first serving of lobster and gave us a
dollop of sweet and tangy sauce that came with the cocktail.
Sadly, it wasn’t spectacular and quite forgettable. If only
I knew, I would have just ordered another steak.
R’s Porterhouse was served next and it was HUGE! It’s good
enough for three hungry individuals!
We had it prepared medium so the center was still a bit
bloody when it was served. There were a few dry parts and some were a bit
overcooked for medium. Some parts were succulent but not outstanding for me to
crave for more.

First Bite: Planet Grapes
I’m a fan of Planet of the Apes and that’s probably why I’m so curious
with Planet Grapes. I find it to be such a witty name and I’m a sucker for anything
witty.
Hello, Planet Grapes!
It has been months since I discovered
this place but the Alabang branch was a bit too far for me so I never had a
chance to visit. But food gods love me so much that Planet Grapes’ newest
branch is just a few blocks away from me—Shangri-La Plaza Mall.
Wine without the drama.
Planet Grapes somehow has a classy
yet warm ambiance. The dishes too aren’t priced that steep though some dishes
are slightly on the expensive side. We got the following: Kitayama Rib
eye Steak (PHP1,195), Grilled
Trio Prawns
(PHP495) and PG Super Sisig
(PHP210). For wine, we got Baby Bad Boy
2010 (PHP280 for 125 ml | PHP180 for 75 ml | PHP95 for 38 ml) and Pircas Negras Torrontes (PHP235 for 125
ml | PHP150 for 75 ml | PHP80 for 38 ml).
First served was the sisig.
R and I got confused with the tomatoes as we never had sisig
with tomatoes before. (I guess it is for the purpose of giving extra crunch?)
Admittedly, it’s not the best sisig
around but it was good. I just wish that it was crunchier.

Raising the bar… Barcino
I was lucky enough to be part of the press launch of Barcino in Rockwell. At first I got lost since I hardly dine in the restaurants beside the entrance of Rockwell. But all the guards know where Barcino is so it wasn’t hard to find it. J
I thought that I was late since the invite mentioned 7pm (I arrived 7:45pm from a trade check). Good thing though that they were still waiting for the other guests. While waiting, I was offered some chips and wine. To be honest, I am not really a wine person, and as a person starving, I felt that my stomach rejected the wine. >.<
The event started around 9:30pm (and I am really famished). They first served an appetizer fondly called as “Smooth Appetizer” which was a fried battered prawn dipped in a squash gazpacho accompanied by Estrella Calacia beer (which can only be bought at Barcino). Smooth appetizer tasted like calamares but I assure you that the shrimp used was big and fresh. Also, I think that it goes well with the beer.
The next meal was a Mi-cuit with spicy bread paired with Cava Vilarnau from Gonzalez Byass. I first noticed that the toasted bread was topped with pepper and I got worried since I cannot tolerate spicy food. But it was not that spicy at all. Also, when you eat it with the sweet spread, it is actually very delicious. The wine on the other hand is like a sparkling wine... a strong sparkling wine (with 12% alcohol content).
The third meal was scallop with caramelized onion, ginger, and tomato sauce paired with Vallformosa Claudia. The scallop is quite bland so you have to make sure that you cover it with the sauce (which is on the bottom of the bowl). The wine was also a bit too strong for me. >.<
The fourth meal was sea bass with concasse tomato made with vanilla, spinach, and mushroom plus clouds of rice noodles paired with Martin Codax Albarino. This one is the best for me since I love sea bass. It was a bit bland as well but I love bland food for I do not get tired of eating it.
The spinach was a surprise for it added flavor to the dish. The wine was also favored by the press with me since it goes really well with the seafood. The sour kick of the wine brought out the rich flavor of each of the ingredients of the dish.
Finally, the dessert was pineapple bomba with crema catalane with fruit pincho paired with Nectar Px. The dessert on a pineapple shell was quite interesting. There were pineapple tidbits with kiwi and strawberry on top of melted sugar. The pudding was too sweet for me though.
As I finished my dessert, I left Barcino with a full tummy yet very eager to go back to try their other meals. But, I will definitely order the sea bass again for it is love.
