First Bite: Jipan's Salted Egg Croissant

I love anything with salted egg. I went crazy with the salted egg prawns of Din Tai Fung and I fell in love with Stella’s salted egg chips. I also hoard those colored eggs whenever I see it in Greenhills. And when I heard that Jipan sells salted egg croissants, I just have to visit it ASAP.

Hello, Jipan!
I used to frequent its SM Megamall branch when I was younger and go crazy with its chocolate croissants. But this time around, I went with Salted Egg Croissant (PHP125). I also had a bag of Matcha Croissants (PHP180, 10 pieces) to go.

Dining here was far from being pleasant. I was not assisted by the available staff in opening the bread box despite seeing that I was struggling with my packages and tray. The cashier was very impatient and didn’t even ask if I wanted my food to go or to be heated. When I asked for my croissant to be heated, she simply said, “Di mo sinabi na dine in (You didn’t say that you want dine in)” then handed my bread to someone to heat it up. And I had to wait for over 10 minutes for my bread to be served. Well, at least they gave me a glass of water while waiting.
I decided to brush it off and enjoy the croissant I have been dying to try. I sliced it open and to my delight, some salted egg yolk oozed out of the croissant. Now, for the moment of truth…

It tasted… okay.
I was expecting a balanced sweet and salty taste but each bite gave me a strong sweet kick. I’m not sure if it was from the bread itself but it was not something I’d expect from salted egg croissant.
The croissant though was flaky and good. But I don't think I'll buy another one.
I got to try some of the matcha croissants after and sadly, it was just green bread. It didn’t taste like matcha at all. It was great though with cream cheese.

Overall, it was a so-so experience. I should have ordered my favorite chocolate croissant instead.

Jipan is located at 2nd Floor, Glorietta 4, Makati City.
