Ba Noi's has been known as one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in Manila. It never fails to delight the taste buds which always yearn for Vietnam's clean flavors. This led to the humble hole in the wall restaurant in Makati to expand to other areas, particularly Pasig. And when my sister suggested that we have lunch there a few weekends ago, it was an easy yes.
Hello, Ba Noi's.
It has been quite a while since I've last dined in Ba Noi's. I remember that I would usually grab a bowl of phở and its tender stir-fried beef.

First Bite: Eatogether Food Hall's Jeepney Avenue
Filipino cuisine will always have a special place in my heart (and tummy). Its comforting flavors never fail to make me feel at home or remember the good ol' days with the family. And I was giddy to spot Jeepney Avenue at Eatogether.
Hello, Jeepney Avenue.
Jeepney Avenue is one of the first stalls you'll see when you enter Eatogether. Situated right beside the counter to get your Vikings Card, its mouthwatering display of crispy pata will get your attention.

First Bite: Eatogether Food Hall's L'Italiano
I miss Italy and its wonderful flavors. Just visiting a local supermarket could score you a five-star meal. And I was happy to discover a new place to get Italian pasta close to the ones I've fallen in love with.
Hello, L'Italiano.
L'Italiano is one of the many food concepts housed by Eatogether Food Hall. It focuses on three items--bread, pasta and pizza.

Love at First Bite: Artisan Emporium
I am now a frustrated foodie. Ever since I left Kapitolyo,
I hardly explore. And I found out last week that there are around 5-7 new
restaurants in Kapitolyo. SEVEN! I really have to explore this weekend! Anywaaaay,
a few weeks back, I went to Spice
& Cleaver and while waiting for R, I spotted a new bakery named Artisan
Emporium and I decided to check it out.
Hello, Artisan Emporium.
The new bakery was just 2 days old
when I visited and the first thing that caught my eye was the display chiller
on the counter. They have salted
caramel, chocolate
and red
velvet panna
cotta (PHP180/jar). I wanted to get chocolate but the staff recommended
red
velvet. Thinking that R prefers red
velvet, I bought that one instead.
And I totally forgot about it till
three days later.

First Bite: Spice & Cleaver
I was overwhelmed by the new restaurants in Estancia.
There are more options now and some of which are fairly
new and I have never visited before. One of which is Spice & Cleaver. I
spotted this new joint the night I had dinner at UCC
Clockwork. And since I can’t wait to try it, I set my sister’s birthday lunch
there.
Hello, Spice & Cleaver!
The place had a few seats left when
we got there. But we managed to get a couch at the far end as the ones on the
sides seem to be set for large groups.
While waiting for my sister, R and I
ordered Fish
and Chips (PHP499), Wild
Mushroom Tartuffo Pasta (PHP350, PHP430 with prawns), Lamb Sausage
(PHP280 for one piece) and house blended iced
tea (PHP120).
First served was my iced tea which
was served in a small glass. It had a nice sweet lemon taste but for PHP120,
this is an expensive drink.
Next served was the lamb
sausage
with mashed
potato base. It was juicy
and meaty and I loved it with sauerkraut
for that extra flavor and different texture.
R was slightly disappointed with the fish
and chips. He ordered it primarily because of the fact that Spice &
Cleaver uses halibut fillet. But the beer battered fish
fillet
served wasn’t something at par with what R expected. It was the frozen kind, he
said. It was okay though I prefer Chelsea’s or Fish & Co.’s.

Sweet Ending: Florabel
I love people who love sweets. Ice
cream, chocolates,
cake,
cookies, brownies, and more ice
cream!!! I love chocolates so much that I once tried the “chocolate diet.”
Well, I don’t think it exists but I tried to eat nothing but chocolates for a
few days. (Yes, it was a bad idea but I had no regrets.) And a few weeks ago, I
met a group who share the same love for sweets. <3
Hello, Florabel.
I recall
that the only time I went inside Florabel was for a meeting with the people
handling Magnum. And since the meeting was held after lunch, I just had a glass
of… water. (And Magnum of course!)
This time
though, we had some sweet meal enders. And we ordered quite a lot! S1, S2, S3
and D were the ones who chose the desserts and they picked Frozen Brazo de Mercedes (PHP225), Chocolate Mud Pie (PHP320), Crème
Brûlée Torte with Fruits in Season (PHP245), Moist Yema Chocolate Cake (PHP275), Valrhona Chocolate Tartlet with Mango Chutney (PHP335), and Chocnut Torte (PHP245).
The Frozen Brazo
de Mercedes tasted a bit too egg-y. (Sorry, I couldn’t think of a better
term for this.) Perhaps I also compare it with the one I had from Spätzle.
I liked the custard though and the contrast of the frozen
meringue with the crunchy graham crust.
The Crème
Brûlée Torte was so-so for me. It was probably my least favorite that night.
It had a slight burnt taste but the fruits were fresh.

Second Bite: Black Olive Cerveceria
Food never fails to make me smile. Whenever I feel down, I eat.
(Sometimes a lot.) And last week, R was not in his best mood so I figured food
could make him smile. Or grin.
Hello, Black
Olive!
It has been a while since my last
visit but nothing much has changed.
I also ordered an apple flavored iced tea and it was… so-so.
|
We got there around 7 p.m. so it wasn’t
packed with hungry yuppies just yet. R got the Black Fettuccini (PHP510) while I chose the Risotto
Verde (PHP605). We also got Black
Olive’s Barbeque Pork Riblets (PHP280).

Second Bite: Burgers & Brewskies
Living near Kapitolyo
and the developing foodie area Capitol
Commons has its perks. I have quick access to the good restaurants near Ortigas.
However, it can pretty much damage the wallet as well. (I seriously need to
save more!) I blame my I-say-no-to-food mentality.
Hello again, Burgers
& Brewskies!
Mr. Flaker J suddenly wanted to have
dinner because he was too hungry to drive back home. And since he knows that I’m
the resident foodie who’s pretty much easy to drag around as long as food’s
involved, he messaged me. Soon, we were in front of Burgers & Brewskies.
The place was pretty packed on a
Thursday night. There was also a guy singing to add some good vibes on a “thirstday”
night. We were lucky to get a table near the bar.
J decided to go for Call
the Nurse (PHP280) while I got Neat
burger
(PHP180) and Krispy Pinkies
(PHP175). I also got a glass of Classic
Mojito (PHP140) while J went for a bottle of beer.
First served was the Krispy Pinkies
and it was great! It’s basically chicken
tenders but instead of the usual bread
crumbs, they used Rice Krispies. As a fan of the crunchy
treat, I loved this dish! I chose honey mustard as my dip.

Now in Manila: Coco Ichibanya Curry House
I am not fond of curry. There, I said it. For some reason, I just do not
like the taste of curry. I try to veer away from restaurants that serve that.
But when I visited Coco Ichibanya in California, things changed. I am now a
curry lover! And I was thrilled when I found out that Coco Ichibanya finally
has a branch here in Manila!
Hello, Coco Ichibanya!
R and I decided to have dinner
together one Friday night after receiving her message that her flight to Thailand
was moved to that weekend. (I just have to meet my good friend as I do not know
when I’ll meet her again. *cries*)
There were still a handful of tables
when we arrived. After a few minutes of staring at the menu (especially at the
cheese curry which has nothing but rice, cheese strings and curry sauce), we
decided to go for Pork
Cutlet Omelet Curry (PHP360), Creamed
Chicken Omelet
Curry (PHP330) and a bowl of Tuna
salad (PHP100). R2 arrived after half an hour and ordered Pork Cutlet with Vegetable Curry
(PHP440) and Milk Tea (PHP100).
Service was pretty quick.
The tuna
salad was crisp and I loved the generous serving of roasted sesame
dressing. Nothing spectacular with the tuna though. It reminded me of the usual
canned tuna.

Summer Love: Larcy’s Frozen Hot Choco Velvet
Can you feel the love heat tonight? Definitely! It’s summer again and
people are off to gym or beach. Me? I’d rather be in a cool place away from the
crowd. And how could I leave the metro when I discovered…
My love, I’m back!
Yes, it’s official. I’m in love… so
in love with the Frozen
Hot Choco Velvet
of Larcy’s!
This sweet
drink enchanted me in one sip. The slightly rough texture and the oh so chocolately
taste were just too much. I also love the creaminess
of the drink. Sinful? Most likely. But hey, we all deserve a reward from after
a tiring week at work or school.
I can’t get over my newest addiction.
See you again soon, Larcy’s!

Mall, Capitol
Commons, Oranbo, Pasig City.

Sweet Find: Larcy’s Cupcakery Café
I am used to having complete meals
every time I eat out. Even when I’m alone, I make sure that I order an
appetizer, main course and dessert.
I love it when I hang out with people who feel the same way and this is
probably why I adore my college friends.
After a happy lunch at Burgers
& Brewskies, my friends and I decided to “hunt” for dessert. We were
craving for something new or cold; and at first, I was sold with the idea of
having dessert
at Caramia.
But since funds were running low, I had
to look for an ATM and that’s when I saw… Larcy’s.
Hello, Larcy’s Cupcakery Café!
The cute and very pink cupcake place
is located at the lower ground of Capitol
Common’s new mall, Estancia.
Since it falls under “new”, my friends and I decided to settle here.
They have several cupcakes
and drinks to choose from. But we went with just cupcakes
such as Quezo de Bola (PHP90), Bananutella (PHP75), Chocolate Salted Caramel (PHP85), and Old Fashioned (PHP70). I also ordered a
mug of Frozen
Hot Choco Velvet
(PHP185).

Love at First Bite: Burgers & Brewskies
Burgers
are love. I still do not get it why restaurants force us to eat burgers with
forks and knives but since I do not want to look like a cavewoman amongst my
friends, I comply with the social norms (?). Last Saturday, my college friends
and I decided to meet up to celebrate the February celebrants’ birthdays. I
love it that F and I share the same birth month. I get to share the bill with
someone. *Weee!* Anyway, since we were having a hard time deciding where to
eat, we opted to visit the new mall at Capitol
Commons instead and try Burgers
& Brewskies.
Hello, Burgers & Brewskies!
The place was pretty much empty
during lunch. Since it was already past 12 when I got there, M, K, L and F
already placed their orders. They got the following: Buffalo
Wings (PHP220), Call the Nurse
(PHP280), Philly (PHP250), Winner Winner Chicken Dinner (PHP230), and
Walk of Shame (PHP340). I ordered Kandi (PHP265) and Bacon Chicharon (PHP210). I also got a glass of Cucumber Lemonade and Sweet Potato Fries when I upgraded my burger
to a combo (just add PHP80).
The group saved me a wing
to try and it had a slightly peppery taste. It was pretty good and flavorful. I
totally forgot to try the bleu cheese dip though.
M’s Walk of Shame burger,
which comes with spiced mustard aioli, egg-in-a-whole wheat bun, crispy bacon,
crisp potato hay (which is very much like PicNic) and B&B Lemonnaise (mayo
with lemon?), was a delicious sight! It was like a breakfast burger as it comes
with bacon and sunny side up egg!
F’s Philly was the healthiest
burger
on our table. Beef patty stuffed with sautéed thinly sliced steak and topped
with onions and pepper, it was the perfect dish for F. (Not for me though as it
doesn’t have bacon.)

Restaurant Discovery: Buffalo Wild Wings
Capitol Commons is starting to become a
foodie destination. At first, I was lazy to visit the place as I have already
visited Tipsy
Pig, Black
Olive, Sentro1771
and Nomama. But my Instagram feed went crazy one time with so many posts about this
new wings place in Estancia Mall. And it sure made me curious. So…
Hello, Buffalo Wild Wings!
The place
was quite packed with yuppies on a weeknight. (I can’t imagine how packed it
will be when the big games are on!)
Since we
were quite hungry, we didn’t mind being at the bar. After browsing the menu, R
and I decided to go for the following: Pepper
Jack Steak Wrap (PHP495), Naked
Tenders (PHP395) and Traditional
wings with Honey BBQ sauce (PHP295, snack | PHP495, small | PHP695, medium
| PHP895, large). We also got unlimited iced tea and lemonade.
First served
were our drinks.
The lemonade
was super sweet! I had a hard time finishing my first glass and I even had to
ask the server to mix the second one with water to dilute it.

Restaurant Love: Sentro 1771
I usually skip Filipino restaurants when I
eat out as it’s the only cuisine I could prepare at home. If I were to choose,
I would always pick Japanese
as salmon
sashimi is L-O-V-E. However, when I’m out with family, I have to take into
consideration their preferences. They love Filipino and American food the most.
So, a few Sundays ago, after having a lechon
feast, we decided to visit Sentro 1771.
Hello, Sentro 1771.
A good
friend of mine told me that Sentro 1771 serves really good food and that made
me curious about the restaurant. I was supposed to visit the place last Halloween
with my UA&P food buddies but since we were still full from our Spätzle
dinner, we decided to go to Starbucks
instead. (Silent boo.)
The place
looked full when we visited but we were lucky as we got a table on the second
floor.
Since we were
famished, we ordered the following: Fresh
Smoked Fish Spring Rolls (PHP280), Rated
GG (PHP295), Camote Cups
(PHP240), and Sinigang na Corned Beef
(PHP595).
First served
were the Fresh Smoked Fish Spring
Rolls.

Restaurant Discovery: Tipsy Pig
It has been a while since I saw a photo of the frequently
Instagrammed Beer Can Chicken. Ever since I saw it, I thought to myself, “I
have to try that ASAP.” Yes, that’s pretty much how my brain works when I see
interesting food. Luckily, J was free and interested to try it too so off we
go! (And we both failed to realize it was White/Pi/Pie Day!)
It was a long day for me as I tried to finish my
pre-employment requirements. (I managed to make a friend while in line for NBI
clearance and he thought I was born and raised in China and he asked if there’s
such thing as NBI clearance there.) Luckily, I finished before 5 p.m. and got
to Capitol Commons just in time for dinner.
The place was still pretty empty when we got there but most
tables were reserved. So we were forced to dine al fresco. But after finding
out that we could dine inside but leave at 9 p.m. as every single table was
reserved, we took the chance as the summer heat and smoke was too much.
J has his heart and tummy set on the Belly Good Sisig Tacos (PHP280) while I
chose the Zuppa Di Tomate (PHP150) and Beer Can Chicken (PHP750). The server said that the chicken is
good for three people and since J and I love to eat, it wasn’t a problem to finish
it. We also ordered a few drinks, beers for J (which were not really to his
liking) and I had one of the house cocktails called Quite a Patty (PHP225/glass).

Restaurant Discovery: Black Olive Cerveceria
Funny how when you get older, birthdays seem to be less and less of a special day. But one thing I still want on my special day is a cake and a meal, may it be breakfast, lunch, or dinner, outside. However, I had prior engagement with a company from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (though I have 12 noon to 2 p.m. as my lunch break). Given that I have never been to Capitol Commons, that was our first option for my birthday lunch.
Hello Black Olive Cerveceria!
The place hardly had customers when we arrived. Well, it was a Wednesday and lunch time so it was pretty much expected.
Since I was in a hurry to finish lunch, we ordered right away. What caught my eye was the Porchetta with Rosemary Roast Potato and Caponata (PHP490) while my mom went for the Grilled Italian Sausage with Roast Garlic Mashed Potato and Pepperonata (PHP390). We also ordered a bowl of Bell Pepper and Tomato Soup with Basil Pesto (PHP220) and Vanilla Pannacotta with Balsamic-marinated Strawberries (PHP220).
While waiting, we were served with a complimentary basket of bread with dip. My mom enjoyed the freshly baked bread and ended up finishing it herself.
Next served was the soup which was served on a huge bowl. It was slightly spicy and I find it rather thick as an appetizer. It was very creamy and the tomato taste was pretty strong (which I love). However, I'd rather go with a slightly lighter appetizer.
The sausage arrived next and my mom loved it as it was not overly processed so it had more texture and it was juicy too.
