Taco Bell has been in Manila for years now but it was only last year when I had its famous tacos. Though it may not be the best taco joint in town, its no frills straight forward Mexican fare does the job in keeping my tummy happy. And a month back, I discovered that Taco Bell also offers pretty good quesadillas!
Hello, Taco Bell.
I usually go for soft tacos whenever I visit Taco Bell and never gave trying its quesadillas any thought. The shop after all is called "Taco" Bell giving the impression that its best item in the menu would be, you got it, tacos.

Restaurant Love: Gringo
Gringo is no doubt one of my favorite restaurants in the Metro. It has been one of my go-to places for chicken ever since my love-at-first-bite encounter with it two years ago. I'd always grab a quarter or half of its Original Chicken and had no idea that I would also fall in love with its ribs and other dishes. And I had a brief moment of truth during my visit at Gringo's latest branch at O'Square, Greenhills.
Hola, Gringo!
I had a hard time looking for Gringo's newest branch as I had no idea that O'Square is not just the building with BDO and Wild Flour on the ground floor. There's another compound fronting the bazaar area of Greenhills Center that is also considered part of O'Square. It took me several circles around the O'Square I know before I decided to ask for directions. Thankfully, it was just a block away and wasn't far enough for me to be at risk of heat stroke from walking under the unforgiving summer sun.

Since 1999: Brothers Burger
Do you still remember what you were doing in 1999? I sure don't but I know three brothers who clearly do. The Jose brothers started to revolutionize how burgers should be that year. The genius trio were tired of the usual burgers fast food chains offer and this triggered them to start their own burger joint--the first to make artisanal burgers. And Brothers Burger was born. Several years later, Brothers Burger is still a brand of choice for foodies particular with their patties. But on its 18th year, Brothers Burger has become more than just burgers.

First Bite: Tittos Latin BBQ & Brew
I’ve been hearing a lot of great reviews about this South American joint in Kapitolyo. I got so curious that I always drag people and convince them to try it out with me. But my first two attempts were not successful. The first one was because of parking and the second one was because we were too full from our first stop. But third time’s the charm.
Hello, Tittos Latin BBQ & Brew! (Finally.)
The spacious restaurant is one of the few that offers a handful of parking spaces in Kapitolyo. But on a good day, the place gets really packed and you’d be lucky if you could score one of the “double parking” spots. Inside, you’d be welcomed by vibrant colors and very South American murals.

Gastro Park Kapitolyo Find #7: The Masala Bar
Our desire to stuff ourselves till we burst brought us to our last Gastro Park Kapitolyo food discovery, The Masala Bar. This stall didn’t have a long line when we spotted it. (The ones with long wait are the milkshake stall and SurFries!!!.) It didn’t cross my mind that the store might offer mediocre dishes hence the lack of foodies lingering in front of its store. I just wanted to maximize my Kapitolyo visit.
Hello, The Masala Bar!
We got the Chicken Tikka Quesadilla (PHP120) as it is easy to be shared and it sounded light, giving us room for drinks or dessert. An order comes with pico de gallo and garlic dip.
The server told us that they will just serve the quesadilla to us. We just have to inform them of where we’re seated.
Our order arrived in about 10 minutes and it was served warm.
I dipped my slice in the garlic dip and topped it with pico de gallo and… it was still bland. I had to sparingly drizzle more garlic dip as I was sharing it with my friends.
I am not sure if we ordered pita with a hint of cheese or Chicken Tikka Quesadilla. I could not taste the chicken or any of the other ingredients. Perhaps they were almost out of ingredients when we placed our order? I have no idea but I’ll buy from the other stalls next time.
The Masala Bar is located at Gastro Park Kapitolyo, 1st Street, Barangay Kapitolyo, Pasig City.

Love at First Bite: Spanglish
Looloo
is an amazing
app. I find myself relying on the app
when I am traveling locally and have no idea where to eat. And last week,
Looloo helped me find another great restaurant.
Hello, Spanglish!
After checking in our hotel,
R and I went out for lunch to fill our tummies before C’s big day. And since we’re
not familiar with the area,
I checked Looloo for some recommendations. There were a bunch of Filipino
restaurants in the list but the one that caught my attention was Spanglish.
Aside from the high rating,
one of my schoolmates reviewed it too saying that it’s a gem in Clark.
Convinced, we headed to the Mexican
restaurant.
The complex where the
restaurant is located looks abandoned with several retail spaces empty.
Spanglish was the only area with a lot of customers. And we were lucky to get
the last table inside the restaurant. (It was super hot that day!)
We decided to order the
following: Chips and Salsa (PHP150),
Chicken Quesadilla
(PHP310), and Chimichanga Plate with
shredded beef (PHP315). R also ordered a glass of House Blend Iced
Tea (PHP65) while I got Espresso
Triple Thick
Milk
Shake (PHP240).
First served was R’s iced
tea and it was nothing spectacular. I also find it a bit too sweet to
quench our thirst.
Chips and salsa
was served next and it was quite filling. R and I ate nonstop and after 10 to
15 minutes of munching, the appetizer calmed our grumbling tummies. The pico de
gallo was fresh though again, nothing extraordinary.
My Espresso
milk shake was dessert and drink combined. It sure was thick
and flavorful. I enjoyed it but I need it with a glass of water.
Finally, the mains were
served.

Mega Food Hall Favorites: Tex-Mex and Sweetea by Da.u.de
I love hanging out with people who love to eat. It means that they are
game to pig out and try different restaurants. My college friends are just like
that and when we met a few weeks back, we were able to visit three different
establishments! (Well, four for K and I.)
After having lunch at Burgers & Brewskies and dessert at Larcy’s Cupcakery Café, we decided to go to Megamall to continue pestering each other (in
the most loveable way possible). And since we like to chit chat while munching,
we headed to Mega Food Hall for some snacks.
K and I went straight to Sweetea by Da.u.de
and she got Starburst (PHP160 for
medium | PHP170 for large) while I got Green
Passion (PHP120 for medium | PHP130
for large). Since there’s a wait time of 6 to 8 minutes, we checked out Tex-Mex after seeing a couple enjoying
a plate of nachos.
Since we were envious (of the food
and not the lovey doveyness just so we’re clear), we ordered Nachos MexGrande (PHP159) and Grilled Chicken Quesadilla (PHP169). After paying, we were
given this coaster looking number that vibrates when our orders are ready. I
hope all food courts have this so that we could roam
around while waiting for our orders.
After a short while, we got all of
our orders and started to dig in.
My Green Passion had a slight fruity
taste from the passion fruit. It was a bit on the bland side but I like it that
way. K liked it too, and even more than her Starburst which she felt would take
a bit of time to be likable.

Kapitolyo Food Stop: Silantro Fil-Mex Cantina
Kapitolyo sure is a foodie destination
with so many restaurants appearing left and right. And since it was a holiday
last October 6, the Foodie Trio of UA&P (which I now baptize as F3) decided
to explore Kapitolyo once again. Our first stop is none other than Silantro.
Hello, Silantro Fil-Mex Cantina!
This wasn’t my first time to visit this place
as I got to try it a few months ago with W. However, we didn’t order food and I
just had their unlimited mojito (for only PHP250!!!). And the mojito was not
bad at all.
We arrived a bit past 11 a.m. and the
place was already packed! It was a good thing though that K’s friends, the
Triple J (as they all have J in their names), arrived early and managed to get
a table inside.
After a quick look at the menu, I
decided to go for the Completo (PHP110) where I could choose three kinds of
meat for my soft shell taco (I chose lamb, oxtail and beef), Silantro
Quesadillas (PHP160) and a glass of Mojito (PHP90).
First served was the mojito but I did
not dare take a sip as I skipped breakfast for the food trip. After the first
10 minutes, I started to become restless and at the 15 minute mark, I started
to be irritable.
Twenty minutes later, the server
approached us to inform me that they were out of oxtail. I snapped! They could
have told me that way before! Why wait for 20 minutes???
Anyway, I told the server to give me
lengua instead and make sure that he serves my order in 5 minutes or less. And
it did. However, we had to wait for a few more minutes for our utensils and
sauce. *sigh*

Restaurant Discovery: Cocina Juan
I am lazy
on Lazy Sundays. I am even lazy to eat on Lazy Sundays! Given that I hardly go
out on Sundays, I eat really late. I normally skip breakfast so that I’ll just
have a big lunch. It became a habit that I find difficult to break. Hence,
whenever I go out on Sundays, I’d leave my place with an empty stomach and just
a few minutes away from being grumpy. (Unless I bring a carton of milk with me
to last me an hour or two.)
A few Sundays
ago was supposed to be a Fishing Day at La Mesa Eco Park. But V and I were
surprised to be greeted by a fishing pond that seems to be owned by Shrek. We
cannot see a single fish. Well, there were a few kids “fishing” but I bet these
kids were there for hours. Plus, there were falling branches that made things
quite scary for us. So after a few minutes of staring at the pond/Shrek’s
swamp, we decided to go to Maginhawa instead.
I was 10
minutes away from being a “hANGRY” cat lady when we finally decided to go for Cocina Juan. The place looks charming
with its bright red wall and there were only two tables occupied.
The
server assisted us to our table and promptly gave us the menu and recommended
some dishes. We went for the Churrasco
Nicaragua (PHP439) as the server mentioned that this one isn’t spicy. I
also got a glass of Cucumber Lemonade
(PHP65) simply because it sounds so refreshing. Since I was really hungry and
starting to show some symptoms of bratinellism, I asked the kind waiter to
choose an appetizer for us as I do not want to think anymore. He chose the Quesadilla Con Tomate (PHP189).

Restaurant Discovery: Madeca
I admit, as much as I
want to be lean and strong, I would choose a food trip over a free workout
anytime. However, the case was different a few weeks back. I felt really heavy
and when I do, I just have to give in to exercise and tried Plana
Forma. It was PAIN. But there’s something I look forward to after every
workout… reward. And by reward I mean food.
After an hour of squatting, T and I went to Podium with the
plan of eating at Wildflour. It was our second attempt to do so but when we
arrived, the place was packed with hungry brunch people. So we decided to look
for another place to have brunch. Then I remembered Madeca. I saw it before in
Yummy magazine and fell in love with the cute mason glasses.
Luckily, the 4th floor of Podium isn’t packed.
(Normally, the busiest floor is the ground floor where Wildflour is located.)
There was only one diner when we arrived.
We noticed that Madeca isn’t an authentic Mexican restaurant. It is a
fusion between Mexican and Filipino. I got intrigued with Lechon Kawali Burrito
(PHP245) so I ordered one along with Spinach and Mushroom Quesadilla (PHP125)
and Guava Mojito (PHP135). T on the other hand ordered Sisig Burrito (PHP225).
The Spinach and Mushroom Quesadilla was on the bland side
but topping it with sour cream and salsa solves that. I love that it was
served warm. The chips were delightful too as it added texture to the dish.

Restaurant Love: Apartment 1B
I hate goodbyes so I normally
say “see you again soon” even though I know that soon isn’t really soon. At
least it doesn’t sound like an end right? Despedidas are meant to wish the
person leaving a happy trip and not a sob exchange fest. And I think that’s
what happened during Frannywanny’s despedida lunch with the Creative Solutions
team.
We had a hard time choosing where to eat as we had a lot of
choices and by a lot I mean A LOT. We’re lucky to have an office near foodie
spots. There’s Kapitolyo, Ortigas, Makati and The Fort a few minutes away from
our office. After a few uhms and aahs, we finally decided to go to Apartment 1B.
The place was pretty packed for a weekday (fine, it was a
Friday). I was excited as I have never tried their food before. Frannywanny
suggested that we share an order of Eggs
Benedict with Salmon and Spinach (1 pc., PHP460; 2 pcs., 790) and Three Cheese Vegetable Lasagna
(PHP490). For starters and for sharing with the whole team, we ordered Baked Samosas (PHP350) and Chicken Quesadilla (PHP350).
We arrived a bit late so we were nursing really grumpy
tummies already so when the starters came, we had little patience to take
photos as we just want to eat. So as soon as we took some photos, we started to
attack the dishes.
The Baked Samosas were divine. Stuffed with mushrooms,
spinach and cream cheese (plus served warm), this is a yummy dish to start your
meal. It had a slight crunch and I just love the slight tanginess of the cream
cheese.
The chicken quesadillas was more flavorful than the samosas.
Each quesadilla was filled with chopped chicken and it went so well with the
tomato salsa and the sour cream. I personally love the sour cream (well, I love
anything sour).
