Manila's food scene is on fire with the influx of local and foreign brands opening left and right. And with Singapore's One-Michelin Star Putien entering the market, we could definitely say that Christmas came in early this year.
Hello, Putien.
Putien started as a humble coffee shop in Singapore back in 2000. Named after Putian, a suburb of Fujian, China, it was Putien's founder, Mr. Fong Chi Chung's way to pay tribute to his hometown. By serving food made with fresh ingredients and packed with flavors, Putien eventually grew into a full scale restaurant and earned its One-Star Michelin in 2016. Now with several branches worldwide, Putien found a new home in Manila, its 67th worldwide.

First Bite: Hai Kang Seafood Restaurant
I usually get stressed out when eating in Chinese restaurants. Everything seems to be so fast-paced. Plate after plate after plate of food gets served within a few minutes and we have to eat fast to make room for the next set of dishes. And the same case is true when we visited one of the popular Chinese restaurants along Wilson.
Hello, Hai Kang Seafood Restaurant.
I’ve never heard of this restaurant before but I was told that this has been around for years (or even decades) and it is quite popular especially to the Chinese community.
I was greeted by a huge dining area with high ceiling and several pocket rooms that could be enclosed by movable partition walls. The place was packed with diners on a Saturday night and one could get lost with and drown in the chaotic dining scene. Thankfully, R’s family was near the entrance and we didn’t have to squeeze our way in to the other side of the restaurant.

First Bite: Nikuya by Buta+Wagyu
I have been excited for Nikuya’s opening ever since I found out that it is the baby sister of Buta+Wagyu, one of our favorite restaurants to date. Marketed as the more affordable version of the upscale wagyu place, this Japanese Korean restaurant focuses more on yakitori, shabu-shabu and a handful of rice dishes. I was invited to its media event but couldn’t make it given the Christmas rush. But thanks to a work holiday, I finally got to visit this place with R.
Hello, Nikuya!
We were warmly greeted by its hostess Erica and were quickly ushered us to our table.
While appreciating the restaurant’s interiors, I realized that Nikuya has very limited seating capacity. Given that each table is equipped with smokeless grill and induction cooker, even solo diners will end up occupying a table good for four or six, especially if they would like to order grilled and/or shabu-shabu dishes. I also noticed that there are no tables available without griller or induction cooker for those who would just like to order ready to eat dishes like bibimbap or rolls. In short, it is best to book a table before paying this place a visit.
Aside from the usual kimchi and dilis, Nikuya also serves pickled radish as part of its wait snack.
While munching on it, the staff was busy preparing our Shabu-Shabu (PHP598) with Sukiyaki and Pork & Chicken broth.

First Bite: Qiwellness Living Teahouse + Bathhouse
They
say that time flies so fast when you are having fun. I believe in that as I
still cannot get over the fact that R and I have celebrated our first anniversary a few weeks back. I still clearly remember our first few dates and
how we became more and more comfortable around each other. But enough of the
mushiness as this entry is all about my degustation experience in Qiwellness
Living Teahouse + Bathhouse.
Hello,
Qiwellness Living Teahouse + Bathhouse.
I
spotted a deal in Deal Grocer while looking for the perfect (and romantic)
anniversary gift for R. Since it’s hard to buy him an actual gift, I figured
he’d appreciate something we'd experience and enjoy together. And so why not a nice
dinner with a beautiful view?
I instantly purchased two coupons (priced at PHP1.950 each) of Qiwellness Living's Yin Yang degustation after reading good reviews about this place.Reservation was also a breeze as the customer relations person replied to my email in less than 24 hours. Qiwellness has already delighted me prior to my dinner. And on the night of our dinner, we were treated like VIPs. <3

The place does not have a screaming signage so it could be a challenge to find this place if you do not have Waze. (So download it now!)
We were asked to wait for a bit outside while the guard radioed the staff inside that we have arrived. In a few minutes, the big red door opened and we were welcomed with a gong. (And I meant that literally.)
We were seated right next to the view of Taal. We would have loved it even more if we could see it. But it was too dark when we got there. Oh well.
It was so windy that night that I was literally shivering. I was barely saved by the complimentary lovely pink and floral tea.
After 20 minutes or so, our first dish arrived and it was Pine Tree-Smoked Clams with Tofu Skin and Paprika.
It was a delightful starter spoon. The flavors were not overwhelming yet you could definitely taste the freshness of the clams. It balanced well with the tofu and paprika.
Next served was a plate of complimentary signature bread and salted butter. And I loved it. The bread was glutinous and was lightly seasoned making you whet your appetite even more.

Cebu Files: Zubuchon
Feed me lechon and I’m
all yours. Well, at least till the next 48 hours or so.
Right after my month long trip, I found myself all buckled
up again to be Cebu-bound for three days. Oh hello, land of lechon (roasted
pork)!
As soon as we landed, we drove to Zubuchon, a pretty popular
place known for its lechon being raved by acclaimed food critic Anthony
Bourdain as the “world’s best whole roasted pig”. Such comment will surely
intrigue foodies and encourage them to visit the restaurant. And we were among
those foodies.
Hey ho, Zubuchon! Whazzzzaaap? (Okay, that was a bit too
much.)
The place was partially full when we arrived but we were lucky
to be able to find a table that could accommodate our huge party of 10. We
quickly roamed around the area, checked out the knick knacks on display and settled
down soon after to order.
