You don't need to find an excuse to get a drink or two and bar chows to pair it with. You deserve it after surviving a grueling week at work or simply living in chaotic Manila. And if you do, we have the perfect alibi which is Alibi.
Hello, Alibi.
Alibi is one of the newest speakeasy bars in Tomas Morato. Located in the basement of Geonbae, one could easily miss this new gem in the city.

A Taste of Buwan: Celebrate Valentine's Day with a Southeast Asian Tasting Menu
Celebrating Valentine's Day differently can be challenging if you've been with your special someone for years. R and I usually take the practical route and celebrate it another day. But there's this new dining concept that would make braving the Manila traffic worth it. And that is Buwan's tasting menu.
Hello, Buwan.
Buwan is the newest dining concept of Chef Julius Neccor and the group behind BOA Kitchen + Socials.

Minnan-Minnan Kitchen: A Hidden Gem in Banawe
Quezon City is one massive foodie destination. We have Tomas Morato which is a great place for nightcaps, Maginhawa for comfy lunch or dinner with family and friends and Banawe for Asian finds. Home to many great Chinese restaurants, I was happy to come across Minnan-Minnan Kitchen.
Hello, Minnan-Minnan Kitchen.
Walking along Banawe is like going on a treasure hunt. You get to see a bunch of unfamiliar names and dining inside is like betting on the lottery... uncertain if you'll hit the jackpot or end up losing money. One name I've never seen before was Minnan-Minnan Kitchen.

Now Open: Hey Brew
There's a new kid in town and it serves some of the most beautiful food and drinks I've seen to date. And unlike its hashtag "hey stranger" the people behind this bar and eatery sure are no strangers to the foodie community.
Hello, Hey Brew Eatery + Bar!
Hey Brew is the newest restaurant and bar headed by the talented Chef NiƱo Laus and Kalel Demetrio. If you've been out and about, you must have heard of these two shaking up the food and beverage industry with their innovative and refreshing concepts.

When in Iloilo: Tytche Grill & Seafood Restaurant
Tagging along R's local trips are tiring and fun at the same time. I get to see the Philippines in a different light, seeing places that are not exactly what you'd consider touristy. And at the same time, I get to experience the local life and savor the different cities' rich flavors. One of my favorite places for seafood is Iloilo and a top contender for the best seafood restaurant is Tytche Grill & Seafood Restaurant in Dumangas.
Hello, Tytche Grill & Seafood Restaurant.
This restaurant is a bit far from the city center and definitely a place I wouldn't consider going if I was traveling Iloilo on my own. Situated near the Iloilo port, it would be hard to visit this place without a car as there are not much public transportation that pass and stop by this area.

Love at First Bite: Urameshi-Ya
It has been months since I saw J's Urameshi-Ya Instagram post and I can't help dream about unlimited wagyu, oysters and scallops. The best part is that it only costs PHP500 (plus service charge). Thankfully, some loolooers were game to brave the Makati weekday traffic to visit the Little Tokyo's not so hidden gem. Since most are free today, July 4 (which also happens to be a Monday, the surest day that Urameshi-ya has wagyu), we decided to go for it!
Hello, Urameshi-Ya!
Little Tokyo was a ghost town when we arrived as most restaurants open at 5 pm. While waiting, we enjoyed some ice cream from Dojo which I will review separately.
It was just 4:30 pm when Che Che of Urameshi-Ya approached our table asking if we're complete as we could already start if we want to. We were pleased as it means that we could eat earlier as I was famished! (I only had SkyFlakes in preparation for this feast!)
Soon, we were given tongs and griller. (We were given two but the other griller was placed on our table after 10 minutes or so.)

Love at First Bite: Alchemy Bistro Bar
I got an email from Janine last week inviting me to Alchemy
Bistro Bar. I’ve heard of this place before where the drinks are fondly
called concoctions. And since we cancelled our La Union trip for the long
weekend, I decided to accept Janine’s lunch invitation (yes, they are also open
for lunch!) and know more about the bar which offers more than just great
drinks.
Hello, Alchemy Bistro Bar!
We were greeted by shades of purple
and nicely decorated walls with flasks containing colorful liquids and a
bicycle. I’m not exactly sure what look they were trying to pull here but it
was quirky
and cute.
The restaurant’s owner, Tina Currie (who
studied in Le Cordon Bleu and worked in the US and Thailand), welcomed us and
gave us an overview of what’s lined up for lunch—Baked Oysters (PHP350), Croquettas
(PHP260), Burrata Cheese Salad (price not on the menu), Alchemy Pizza (PHP450), Gnocchi (PHP390), Pan Seared Salmon (PHP465), Roasted
Organic Chicken (PHP450), Slow-braised
Lamb Shank (PHP775), CrĆØme Brulee
(PHP210) and Cheesecake with passion
fruit coulis. We also had Alchemy
Smoothie and Four Fruit Smoothie
(PHP180 each).
First served was the baked oysters
and R and I were impressed with the Aklan sourced shells. It was very fresh and
it was so delightful with the spinach, hollandaise sauce and gruyere
cheese. [Note: Be careful though and check your oyster.
R ate his fast and didn’t notice a little shell piece was on the oyster
and it hurt his tooth.]
Next served was the Burrata Cheese Salad
and it was delicious. The giant red tomato slices made the tomato lover in me
jump for joy! The prosciutto ham added flavor and the mozzarella on the outside
and cream cheese in the inside combo made me go crazy! I also love the play of
textures of the ingredients.
The croquettas were piping hot when
it was served and I just found out when I took a big bite. I love the smooth potato
with cheese stuffing. It was a great contrast with the crunchy breading. And
the paprika dip wasn’t bad at all.
But if I were to choose between
croquettas and gnocchi, I would choose the latter. Made with Gorgonzola cheese
sauce, it was a cheesy
affair with my taste buds. I love the crispy pancetta too for added bite.
To fight off the “umay” factor, I munched on the herb garlic bread. This dish
is a bit heavy on the tummy though so it’s best to share it with a fellow
cheese lover.
R and I were slowly getting full when
the Alchemy pizza
arrived and it was pretty big. The wood fired pizza
was amazing too. The speck ham, which was slightly different from prosciutto,
added flavor to the pizza. I also enjoyed the slight tanginess from the
Balsamic sauce drizzled on the arugula. And yes, the arugula made us feel that
we were eating something healthy.

Friday Night Destination: Tipple & Slaw
Ever since we moved to a busier
part of Manila, things felt busier at work too. But since temptation to eat
out is stronger in our new area, dragging people for dinner became easier.
Hence Friday
Night Out with officemates!
Hello, Tipple & Slaw!
It has been
a while since I last visited Tipple & Slaw. I recall it was way back August
when I first (and last) visited.
The place
remained the same and I got the same table too as last time. But this time,
instead of just ordering one dish, we ordered six. I ordered Oyster
Chowder
(PHP180) first as I was famished. D got the Sriracha Mac
N Cheese (PHP200) while C1 ordered Chicken
Nuggets (PHP250). C2 and A ordered Peruvian
Roast Chicken (PHP350) for sharing while M and I (Ćthat’s me, not an initial I) got
the Roast
Beef (PHP550). We also ordered Meat-zza
(PHP650) for sharing.
First
served was my oyster
chowder
and it was super salty. It tasted like I was drinking creamy seawater! But I was
really hungry to the point of being hangry so I kept slurping and I also ate
the crispy (and oily) oysters on the side.
Next served
was D’s mac
n cheese and everyone reacted that it was spicy. Well, it really was but
people who love that kind of kick will adore this dish.
(P.S. It wasn’t super spicy.)
C1’s
chicken nuggets
order seemed to be a value for money. Not bad for PHP250.

Love at First Bite: Locavore
I seriously love my area. Crowd favorites
such as Silantro,
Poco
Deli, Rub
Ribs, Calderon
and Mad
Marks can all be found in Kapitolyo. My new
favorites Avi,
Haru,
Open
Kitchen, Gostoso,
and Tomahawk
are all in the area too. And last Friday, I discovered a new favorite, Locavore.
I've heard
of Locavore from my friend F who
randomly messaged me if I have tried eating there. Curious, I made my research
and upon seeing the photo of the Sizzling Sinigang, I was convinced that I have
to dine there soon.
However, I
failed on my first try. Locavore was
packed and waiting time could be half an hour to over an hour. My mom and sister
were already hungry then so we went to Pearl
Drive instead for some chi-mek
(chicken and beer).
I was informed that the best way to secure seats is to make a reservation. It’s not really my habit to do so unless I feel that the place is awesome and always packed. I could still count how frequent I made reservations. I recall I did with Your Local, Haru, Bistecca, House of Wagyu, and Nav.
When we
arrived, the place was still spacious with only a few tables occupied. However,
we did notice that almost all tables were tagged “reserved”.
Since I
already have a copy of the menu, I already “planned” on what to order. I got Sizzling Sinigang (PHP530), Lechon
and Oyster Sisig (PHP400), Crispy Tilapia (PHP280), Mac’s Boneless Fried Chicken (PHP240)
and Calamanjito (PHP280 for two
glasses during Happy Hour).

The Shack: Better than The Boiling Crab?
The Boiling Crab was
part of my I-have-to-visit-this-place-no-matter-what list when I went to the
States a few months back but unfortunately, even though I was in LA for quite a
long time, I wasn’t able to visit it. The closest was standing outside the place.
*sad* Then again, I was able to visit a restaurant that has a similar concept.
Well, close enough, I guess.
Hey, The Shack!
The place has a beach feel to it. I guess it is to reinforce
that they serve seafood thus the seaside ambiance. We easily got a table as the
place wasn’t that packed and ordered right away.
We ordered some shrimps
with mild sauce ($8.99), seasoned fries
($2.99), crispy wings ($4.99), and raw oysters ($7.99/half a dozen;
$13.99/dozen).
